Understanding the Qibla Angle toward Mecca
The Qibla angle is the degree value that indicates the direction of the Kaaba relative to geographic north. It differs between countries and cities because the computation depends on your position on the spherical surface of Earth. For example, the Qibla is roughly southwest from Riyadh, southeast from Istanbul, east from Cairo, west from Jakarta, and northeast from Casablanca; it exceeds 270° in most cities far to the north such as Western Europe, and approaches 90° in Southeast Asia.
Measured clockwise from geographic north — 0° means north, 90° east, 180° south, 270° west.
Differs by location and city because the calculation depends on your actual coordinates on a spherical Earth.
Does not change with the time of day because Mecca is a fixed point — only your own location changes it.
Knowing the Qibla angle for your location lets you find the bearing quickly with any ordinary compass when the electronic Qibla compass is unavailable, and lets you fix a prayer mat at home or in a hotel so the direction is always ready without recomputing for every prayer. When in doubt, compare the Qibla compass reading on the phone against the position of the Kaaba on the map; if they disagree, magnetic interference is likely and the map should be trusted more than the compass at that moment.
